CPE412   Engineering Biotechnology   (10 credits)

Description

The aim of this unit is to provide students with an awareness of biotechnological developments, especially in light of post-genome science. A particular philosophical aim of the unit is to involve the students in the role of chemical engineering in the current and newer phases of biotechnology. Financial, political and other practical constraints will also be discussed. Generic examples of metabolic engineering, systems biology and other important areas will be discussed from the point of view of process and products. The unit will be run as small group teaching with seminars and directed reading. Some minimal practical exposure is likely.
